Before taking the UOSM2008 Living and working on the web module, I thought my knowledge of the digital world and social media was adequate. I partly believed that by having an Instagram, Facebook and Twitter account that this meant I was socially aware online. When analysing my Self-Test (in slide show) I remember not being certain on many of the topics asked about in the table. What I can say confidently from what I have learnt in Topic 1 is that I am “digital resident”.
Topic 1 has enabled me to understand what it means to be a “digital resident” when using social media but admittedly my professional identity was something I had not considered. Before this topic I had created a Linkedin profile but had not used it since the day I created in (3 years ago!). Through UOSM2008 I have been motivated to regularly check my account but more importantly connect with other users. Through updating my profile on LinkedIn I have in fact communicated with a company in England who through seeing that I worked for their company in Madrid wanted to connect with me and discuss possible internships when I graduate! As a result I have learnt how important it is to stay up to date with your activity but also to interact with other people in order to build up your connections!
Topic 2 was the most insightful topic, I learnt how important it is to understand your identity online and how to control it. I was not aware of the consequences some of my activity could have when applying for jobs and as a result I have ensured that I think about how professional my activity appears on social media and to think twice before uploading/tweeting something that could be misinterpreted . This is of high importance to me given that I use my Facebook and Instagram account so frequently. After completing this topic, my security settings for my social media accounts have completely changed to ensure that my personal information is secure.
A social network that I have been newly introduced to because of UOSM2008 is about.me. After seeing the effects my LinkedIn account had when keeping it up to date I strived to do the same with my about.me page. I have now obtained new skills that will enhance my employability for future jobs and I am now able to connect with other people easily online by simply sharing my page.
To conclude, my digital portfolio has grown dramatically and I have for the first time uploaded a YouTube video, made my first prezi, Piktochart and web page. This list goes on and I think I can confidently say that I have understood my online identity and more importantly become more present online. Through keeping up to date on all my social media accounts I have been communicating with a company for a potential job, I have been using my blog (first time doing a blog too!) to demonstrate to employers my skills online. It goes without saying that this module has been the most insightful but also the most enjoyable module I have taken in my four years at University and it is thanks to UOSM2008 that I now fully understand how to live and work on the web.
I decided to summarise my experience using Powtoon.
